curiosity killed the cat

August 4, 2008

I heard a ‘meow’ at the doorstep, and there it was. I needed to get some snaps of it so I pulled a ribbon for it to play with and managed to get some decent shots of it at the same time.

A shot that is highly inspired from the movie, The Dark Knight. This is a self portrait of me trying to portray the joker.

The dramatic lighting made me go with such dramatic title. It was shot at Bukit Tinggi, a reproduction of a french village dating back to the 16th century.

Writing a critical analysis using the 3 act structure.

Act 1: Beginning
It happens to be Gromit’s birthday. As soon as Wallace wakes up, he presses the breakfast service button and is taken off the bed automatically by his self invented machine that also puts on the clothes for him and make his breakfast with Gromit’s help. After Wallace checks on the bills, he is worried about the financial crisis they are in and lets it slip about the expensive gifts he got for Gromit. Shortly, the 9.05 train brings the first gift which is a dog collar and lead set. He is then given a second present, which is a moving trouser, named as the “techno trousers” from Wallace as he is lazy enough to take Gromit for walks. Techno trousers drag Gromit outside for a walk; meanwhile, Wallace settles the bills and comes up with a solution, a lodger, and places an advertisement in the window. After Gromit returns home and awhile later, the door bells rings. It was a penguin, who was the lodger. Wallace leads the penguin to the guest bedroom. But unfortunately for Gromit, the penguin takes advantage of Gromit’s bedroom and makes himself at home. Gromit can’t sleep because of the loud music the penguin is playing. So he tries to sleep on the sofa and finally on the kennel. (Plot point 1)

Act 2: Middle
In the morning, the penguin gets the slipper and newspaper before Gromit does, thus Wallace starts to favor him better inviting him for supper that evening. Gromit watches both Wallace and the penguin having fun and decides to leave home in tears and has to sleep in the street for the night. Meanwhile, at Wallace’s residence, the penguin watches Gromit leave and masters the functions of the techno trousers and re-configures during mid night.
Wallace wakes up in the morning and lands on the techno trousers. He struggles to get out of them but finds himself helplessly stuck in them. Later, it drags him all around the town which makes the penguin practice the functions better for its mission. In the meantime, Gromit is going through advertisements for a room and finds that the penguin is wanted by the police. Unexpectedly, Gromit sees Wallace in the techno trousers and follows him to find the penguin controlling it and becomes suspicious. Gromit spies on the penguin and observes it measuring the exterior of the City Museum. Gromit sneaks back into his old bed room and finds the paperwork on stealing a blue diamond from the museum and is now more aware of the plan.
When Wallace is asleep after the day’s misadventure, the penguin leads him to the museum for the grand theft. The alarm sets off as a loose ceiling tile Wallace was hanging on to makes him out of balance, and senses into the laser alarm system getting them nearly arrested. After reaching home, the penguin locks Wallace in the closet and is confronted by Gromit. The penguin points the pistol at Gromit and he is locked in too, but not for long. Gromit fiddled with the techno trousers wires and they get out chasing and catching the penguin. (Plot point 2)

Act 3: End
After capturing the penguin, he is handed over to the police by Wallace and Gromit. They receive $1000 reward for the wanted penguin which makes them get off debt. In the final scene, the penguin is locked in the Zoo.

We had to color any line art of our choice by using layers and the air brush tool to create different color shades (creating highlights and shadows) for a more 3 dimensional rendering.
